Biography

Soprano Irene Hoogveld (1992) was born in the Netherlands. She studied piano before discovering her classical voice at age 16. In 2017 she received her Bachelor’s degree with a cum laude distinction from ArtEZ University of the Arts, Zwolle and studied with soprano Claudia Patacca. She is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London as an Guildhall Artist Master in Performance with acclaimed mezzo soprano Sarah Pring.

Irene has performed in many concerts and song recitals as a soloist. Notable works are the Gloria – Poulenc, Elias, Hear my prayer and Psalm 42 – Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Messiah – Händel, Mass in D and Te Deum – Dvořák, Gloria, Magnificat and Nulla in mundo pax sincera – Vivaldi, Requiem – Fauré, Matthäuspassion, Johannespassion, Osteroratorium and several cantatas – J.S. Bach and Requiem – Gounod.

Operatic experience includes the main role Operateuse in the world premiere of children’s opera Paard, Brandweerwagen, Kikker (Horse, Fire truck, Frog) – Verberkt (2016) in collaboration with the Kameroperahuis and the Dutch National Youth Orchestra (NJO).  In 2018 Irene performed three mid-sized roles in the original Dutch opera production Thijl by Jan van Gilse, performed for the first time in 38 years. She also covered the main female role, Nele for this production. Other engagements include Dido and Aeneas – Purcell, a staged Bauernkantate by J. S. Bach and experimental performances with the Kameroperahuis. Irene has sung the first installment of the very successful OperaLunch series, commissioned by the Dutch National Touring Opera.

Furthermore, Irene has premiered, performed and recorded multiple works from contemporary composers as a soloist and has extensive experience in working with unconventional locations and ensembles. Being passionate about modern music, Irene has been a part of multiple premieres of contemporary Dutch composers. These include Tera de Marez Oyens, Bernard van Beurden, Zacharias Falkenberg, Joep Franssens and Frans Vermeerssen. The latter was performed in collaboration with the Dutch Symphony Orchestra, broadcasted live on national radio. She has also performed pieces by Alison Bauld, Terence Allbright and Peter Wiegold.

Irene has worked with the Dutch National Touring Opera, London Symphony Orchestra, National Accordeon Ensemble, Kameroperahuis and the Dutch National Youth Orchestra. She has performed in venues as Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Barbican Hall, Milton Court Music Hall and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Irene has successfully completed internships with the Dutch Radio Choir/Marcus Creed and Nederlands Kamerkoor/Hartmut Haenchen.

Future engagements include a role in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in collaboration with the Guildhall Opera Course, a project with the Prince Consort at Wigmore Hall and a world premiere of contemporary music at Wigmore Hall.

Irene has won the Euregio Vokalwettbewerb in Heek, Germany and the Open Podium in Doetinchem. She was a finalist during the Zangconcours Doorwerth 2013 and received an Encouragement prize during the Prinses Christinaconcours in 2014. She was a finalist of the Susan Longfield Prize and received the Audience Prize of the Chartered Surveyor Prize in 2018. Irene is selected as semi-finalist for the  Mozart Singing Competition 2019.
