Biography

Dutch soprano Irene Hoogveld (1992) studied piano before discovering her classical voice. In 2017 she received her Bachelor’s degree Cum Laude at ArtEZ University of the Arts, Zwolle where she studied with soprano Claudia Patacca. She is currently studying at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London as an Guildhall Artist Master in Performance with acclaimed mezzo soprano Sarah Pring.

Irene has performed in a wide range of concerts and song recitals. Irene made her Barbican Hall debut in 2018 with a selection of Russian songs, and performed twice in Wigmore Hall in 2019. Further concert repertoire includes Gloria – Poulenc, Elias, Hear my prayer and Psalm 42 – Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Messiah – Händel, Mass in D and Te Deum – Dvořák, Gloria, Magnificat and Nulla in mundo pax sincera – Vivaldi, Requiem – Fauré, Matthäuspassion, Johannespassion, Osteroratorium and several cantatas – J.S. Bach and Requiem – Gounod.

Operatic experience includes Mustardseed in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Guildhall Opera Course (2019), ). Gilline, Kathelijne, Dame van Dudzeele, and Nele (cover) in the world premiere of Thijl by van Gilse (2018), which was nominated for an International Opera Award for Discovered Work. She sang the main role Operateuse in the world premiere of children’s opera Paard, Brandweerwagen, Kikker (Horse, Fire truck, Frog) – Verberkt (2016) in collaboration with the Kameroperahuis and the Dutch National Youth Orchestra (NJO). Other engagements include 1st Witch/Spirit in Dido and Aeneas – Purcell, Mieke in a staged Bauernkantate (2015) by J. S. Bach and experimental music performances with the Kameroperahuis. Irene has sung the first installment of the very successful OperaLunch series in 2014, commissioned by the Dutch National Touring Opera.

 Furthermore, Irene has premiered and recorded a number of world by Dutch contemporary composers as T. de Marez Oyens, B. van Beurden, Z. Falkenberg, L. van Voorst, F. Vermeerssen and J. Franssens. The latter was performed in collaboration with the Dutch Symphony Orchestra and broadcasted live on national Radio 4. She has also performed pieces by composers as Alison Bauld, Terence Allbright and Peter Wiegold, Thea Musgrave, P ēteris Vasks and Charles Giffen

Excerpts as Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Frau Fluth (Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor), Ann Trulove (The Rake’s Progress), Rusalka (Rusalka) and were performed during the Grachtenfestival Amsterdam, with the Dutch National Touring Opera and British Youth Opera.

Irene has worked with the Dutch National Touring Opera, London Symphony Orchestra, National Accordeon Ensemble, Kameroperahuis and the Dutch National Youth Orchestra. She has performed in venues as Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Barbican Hall, Milton Court Music Hall and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Irene has successfully completed internships with the Dutch Radio Choir/Marcus Creed and Nederlands Kamerkoor/Hartmut Haenchen.

Irene has won the Euregio Vokalwettbewerb in Heek, Germany and the Open Podium in Doetinchem. She was a finalist during the Zangconcours Doorwerth 2013 and received an Encouragement prize during the Prinses Christinaconcours in 2014. She was a finalist of the Susan Longfield Prize and received the Audience Prize of the Chartered Surveyor Prize in 2018. Irene was a semi-finalist for the  Mozart Singing Competition and Händel Singing Competition 2019.

Future engagements include Venus and Adonis – Blow: Venus (cover) on the Guildhall Opera Course, Cunning Little Vixen – Janáček: Jay with London Symphony Orchestra/Sir Simon Rattle, and starring in a charity concert for Transforming Autism.
